Orlando Pirates' bid for the Carling Knockout trophy ended in a penalty shoot-out defeat to Richards Bay FC on Saturday.

Despite expectations, the Pirates' lineup showed few alterations from their previous match against Cape Town Spurs, with Nkosinathi Sibisi and Monnapule Saleng being brought back in, replacing Olisa Ndah and Thabang Monare.

Early in the game, Abel Mabaso, playing against his ex-team, seized a loose ball but couldn't rattle Pirates' goalkeeper Melusi Buthelezi.

The Pirates dominated possession afterwards, with Saleng narrowly missing a goal with a curled shot.

Richards Bay adopted a defensive stance, pushing the Pirates to widen their attack and utilize the runs of Saleng, Thembinkosi Lorch, and Kermit Erasmus.

Saleng nearly scored following a wide run and a powerful shot, eliciting a sharp save from goalkeeper Philasande Manqele.

Just before half-time, Deon Hotto's shot from close quarters hit the post, leaving the score level.

The second half saw the Pirates' defense, particularly Sibisi and Timm, working hard to fend off Richards Bay's advances.

Despite the pressure, no goals were scored in regulation time, leading to the substitution of Lorch for Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo, which was met with disapproval from the fans. The game moved into extra time.

The Pirates looked more assertive in extra time, with a dangerous attempt from Patrick Maswanganyi causing problems for Manqele.

With the teams still in a stalemate, the game proceeded to penalties.

In the shoot-out, the Pirates faltered with Hotto missing the first attempt, while Richards Bay scored all their penalties, securing their victory and advancement to the semi-finals.
